PART PRODUCTS
2.01 WATER PIPING SYSTEMS
A. Water Piping Above Grade: Type "L" hard drawn, seamless copper water tube, ASTM B88 and
Federal pecilicatien WW -T -799. Joined with wrought copper pressure fittings, ANSI BI 6.22. Make
joints using "lead tree" solder and a non - corrosive, paste -type flux. Core solder is not allowed.
Solder will be solid string or wire type. Where soldered copper piping is connected to threaded
brass piping, use a cast brass adaptor.
B. Water Piping Below Grade (Under Slab):
1. 2 inches and Under: Type "K" soft copper without joints beneath slab. If joints are necessary,
bring pipes above slab in a wall, make pints, and turn back down under slab.
2. 2 -1/ Inches and Up: Type "K " hard drawn with brazed fittings.
C. Make piping connections to fixtures and equipment with chrome - plated seamless brass tube, ASTM
8135 and Federal Specification WW -T -791. No ferrous piping or materials are allowed in water
piping smaller than 4 Inches.
D. Insulation: Owens- Coming Fiberglas 25 ASJ /SSL. Insulate domestic hot and cold water lin3s with
rigid glass fiber insulation, with maximum K factor at 75 °F of 0.23, 3 Wit density minimum of 1/2 inch
thick with white all- service jacket (vapor retarder). Insulate fittings with PVC fit6g covers with glass
fiber inserts.
1. Substitutions: Under provisions of Section 01600 and subject to compliance with requirements,
one of the following manufacturers may be substituted for that specified.

2.02 SANITARY DRAINAGE

A. Zum No. 2 -1022 Series all bronze primer valve with removable operating parts, integral vacuum
breaker, and gasketed access cover for installation in a cold water service line to a plumbing fixture
with piping to fixture required trap seal.

greater than 75 psi, provide a pressure reducing valve ahead of all fixtures and located in an
accessible place.
B. Pressure Reducing Valve: Series 223, by Watts or Series 500, by Wilkins.
C. Provide shut -off valve at each side of pressure reducing valve.
D. Set valve pressure to 50 psi.

1.05 WARRANTY
A. Warrant to Wal -Mart that materials, equipment. except Owner- furnished equipment, and workmanship
provided under this Division of the Specifications will be free from defects for a period of one year
from the date of acceptance by Owner for beneficial use by Wal -Mart. Additional equipment
warranty requirements are stated in other sections of the Specifications.

A. Products are to be new and free from defects, and are tj be installed by competent specialists for
each subtrade in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Materials or equipment not
meeting these standards, or the acceptance of the Architect/Engineer, maybe rejected by Owner,
and will be replaced at no additional cost to Owner.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 PIP . 3TALLATION
A. Conceal piping in pipe chases, walls, furred spaces, and above ceiling, unless otherwise indicated.
B. Should any condition arise which would cause piping or ductwork to be exposed in finished areas, it
will be called to the Owner's attention immediately, and correction of the condition will be made in
accordance with the Owner's instructions.
C. Frr items to be installed in split face CMU, grind surface of CMU to a smooth finish for tight
Installation. Seal with sealant.
3.02 HANGERS AND SUPPORTS
A. Adequately support pipes throughout the buildings, both horizontal and vertical. Securely attach to
structure overhead by methods approved at job site.
1. For Projects in Seismic Zones 2B, 3 or 4: Provide sway bracing to comply with code seismic

1.03 DEFINITIONS
A. Conform to the following criteria for Interpretation of terms used In this Section.
B . Wal -Mart "Small" Store: Typically under 80,000 sq.ft., without movable shelving system "rolling racks"

C. Wal -Mart "Large" Store: Typically over 80,000 sq.ft., with movable shelving system "rolling racks" in
main stockroom areas.
1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION - DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
A. System to provide coverage for building areas as noted in Schedule, as shown on drawings and as
specified herein.
B. Provide system to NFPA 13 ordinary hazard, Group 2 occupancy requirements (Mercantile). NFPA
13, Figure 2 -2.1 will be the standard for water supply demand and sprinkler design densities, for the
retail area densities. NFPA 231 C is the standard for stockroom densities.
C. System design shall be based upon water flow test data shown on project Civil Drawings. Water
flow test data does not include any reductions for backflow preventers. If backflow preventers are
required, use reductions as specified. Minimum water supply is relational to stockroom densities.
Verify water flow test data. If actual water flow is greater than shown on Civil Drawings, then provide
written justification of changes (prior to system design) to Wal -Mart and CIGNA for their approval.
1. Water Supply Requirements(Wal -Mart "Small" Store): The minimum acceptable water supply,
at the base of the riser, for design use is 900 gpm.
a. Standard Design required: If residual pressure is greater than 30 psi, without backflow
preventer. (35 psi with backflow preventer.)
j b. 750 gpm Pump Design required: If residual pressure is 20 -29 psi, without backflow
with backflow (Maximum sprinkler density 0.30 gpnVft.) proventer. (34 psi preventer.)

actual requirements.

2.17 HOSE BIBBS
A. Hose Bibbs (Toilets): Model 24P, by Woodford. 1/2" with adjustable packing nut with deep stem
guard, teflon impregnated packing, standard "0" size washer, vacuum breaker- backilow preventer,
loose tee key, and polished chrome finish.
B. Hose Bibbs (TBO): Model 24, by Woodford. All brass, wheel handle, adjustable packingg nut with
deep stem guard, Teflon impregnated packing and standard "O" size washer. Provide with each I
hose bibb a vacuum breaker - bacMlow preventer. Provide Tee Key Operator at Freezer /Cooler
Locations.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 PIPING INSTALLATION
A. Install piping neatly and parallel with, or perpendicular to, lines of the structure. Install pipe hangers
to maintain accurately aligned piping systems, adequately supported both laterally and vertically.
Where practicable, connect two or more vents together and extend as one vent through roof. Make
vent connections to stacks by appropriate use of 45 wyes, long sweep quarter bends, sixth, eighth,
or sixteenth bends, except that sanitary tees may be used on the vertical stacks.
1. Install horizontal sot, waste, and vent pipe with a grade of 1/4 inch per toot where possible and
required by code, and not less than 1/9 inch per toot. jB. Conceal piping in pipe chases, walls, furred spaces and above ceiling in sales area, stockrooms with 11ceilings, vestibules, garden center with ceilings and office areas.
C. Extend condensate drain piping frnm units with condensate discharge. `

3.02 PIPING INSULATION - INSTALLATION
A. Domestic hot and cold water lines: Insulate witn specified insulation. Insulate fittings with PVC fitting
covers with glass fiber inserts. Insulate lines above slab, and exposed lines under f andi -cap
lavatories.
B . Insulate drain lines under handi -cap lavatories with same insulation as used for dom ,3st c water lines.
Insulate piping in insulated toilet room walls.
C. Roof Drainage Insulation: Insulate roof drains and piping with specified insulation. Adhere insulation
with 6 inch wide adhesive strips on 16 inch centers. Provide 16 gage annealed tie wire, :spiral wound,
or tied at 16 foot centers for securing Insulation until adhesive sets. Butt insulation and seal joints with
2 inch wide foil tape, adhered over joints. Insulate drain bodies, vertical connections between drains,
and horizontal piping, and all connected horizontal piping.
3.03 PIPE TESTS
A. Test piping before installing equipment and before insulation Is applied, using specified methods
and conditions. Subject piping to test for not less than 24 hours under inspection by Wal -Mart
Construction Manager. Make necessary replacements and repairs and repeat tests until entire
system is accepted as satisfactory. Work includes testing equipment. After installation of equipment,
operate systems, clean out scale, dirt, oil, waste, and foreign matter, and correct additional leaks.
Test underground piping prior to backfilling.
B . Test plumbing drainage systems under 10 foot static head. Test water systems under 150 psig
hydrostatic pressure.
C. Sterilize domestic water system to meet regulatory agency requirements. Flush system thoroughly of
dirt and foreign matter, then fill with water treated with 50 ppm of chlorine. During filling process,
open valves and faucets several times to assure treatment of entire system. Leave treated water in
system for 24 hours after which time system may be flushed: if residual chlorine is not less than 10
ppm, repeat flushing. After sterilization, receive approval by regulatory agency on samples of water
in system.

2. Water Supply Requirements(Wal -Mart "Large" Store): The minimum acceptable water supply,
at the base of the riser, for design use is 1150 gpm.
a. Standard Design required: If residual pressure is greater than 38 psi, without backflow
preventer. (43 psi with backilow preventer.)
b. 1000 gpm Pump Design required: If residual pressure is 20.37 psi, without backflow
preventer. (42 psi with backflow preventer.)
c. 1000 gpm Pump and 100,000 gal. Tank Design required: If residual pressure is less than 20
psi.
3. PSI hown above for backflow preventers must be adjusted it reduced pressure or double
check - detector type are required. (see 2.05.C.)
D. Provide a 5 pound cushion between the supply curve and the demand point, including the 250 gpm
hose stream allowance.
E. Local authorities having jurisdiction may require the following areas to be sprinklered: Truck Dock
Canopies, Wastepaper areas, Open Canopies at front and sides of building, Garden Center
Canopies, and Trash Compactor Chute. Be responsible for verifying sprinkler requirements and
providing protection for these areas as required by local authorities. If sprinkler system in these
areas is subject to freezing, then use anti - freeze loop.
1.05 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit the following under provisions of Section 01300,
1. To ensure proper and time)y approval of submittals, it is imperative that submittals be
complete, accurate and in full compliance with specifications.
2. No extension of time will be allowed due to submittal approval delays due to rejected
submittals. If submittal is rejected, revise and submit until approved.
B. Submittal Rejection: If submittal is rejected by CIGNA for any reason listed below, Wal -Mart
Stores, Inc., will back - charge the Contractor $200.00 (Two Hundred Dollars) via Change Order, to
cover the processing costs of each subsequent review, until submittal is approved.
C. Submittal shall include, but is not limited to, fire protection system design, product data, shop
drawings, hydraulic calculations, and additional data as may be required by local authorities having
jurisdiction. CIGNA will reject submittals for the following reasons:
1. Hydraulics: Input errors, incorrect remote areas, shop drawings do not match calculations, etc.
2. Design Problems: Incorrect densities and design areas. Wrong equipment, wrong area per
head, hose station missing, incomplete system design, etc.
3. Wrong Water Test: Did not use Wal -mart water test found on project Civil Drawings. No other
water test data is permitted for system design submittals.
4. Backflow Preventors: Devices Incorrectly located on the suction side of pumps. Improper
friction loss used in calculations. Device Installed in the vertical position.
5. Pump Details: Make, model number unknown. Piping and valve arrangement not defined.
product data not submitted. Electrical details missing.
6. Pump Electrical: Safety shut -off not shown in power feed to pump controller.
7. Incorrect Pi e: Unapproved pipe pproducts being proposed. Submit pipe as specified.
8. Incomplete Caloulatlons: Submit carulatlons for all areas sppecified and shown on drawings.
9. Incorrect Valves: Do not propose OS &Y valves when PIV's are specified.
10. Incorrect Sprinkler Heads: Unapproved sprinkler heads being proposed as substitutions.
Submit sprinkler heads only as specified.
11. Substitute products which are proposed, but not specified, will be cause for rejection and
200.00 penalty, described above, will be Imposed until submittals are approved by CIGNA.
D. Send submittals to governing authorities and CIGNA within 15 days after award of contract. Expect

3. Submittals to Wal -Mart: After receiving approval from the governing authorities and CIGNA,
forward two (CIGNA stamped and approved) copies of the submittal to Wal -Mart Construction
Department, before Fire Protection Work begins.
E. Certificates: Submit a certificate upon completion of the fire protection sprinkler piping system
stating that the work has been completed and tested in accordance with NFPA 13, that there are no
defects in the system, and that it is operational. Sprinkler test procedures and certificate format will
be as Indicated in NFPA 13, unless otherwise directed by the governing authorities.
1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Sprinkler Systems: Perform work in accordance with NFPA 13 and NFPA 231C and other applicable
NFPA standards.
B Welding Materials and Procedures: Perform in accordance with ASME Code.
C. Equipment and Components: UL listed/FM approved with appropriate labels or markings.
D. Regulatory Requirements (Governing Authorities):
1. Comply with applicable state and local codes, and with the requirements of other authorities
having jurisdiction. Confnnn to "class 4 commodity" for all classifications of occupancy, area
coverage, rating of heads, and maximum number of heads served by each branch line and riser.
2. Once General Contractor has been awarded Contract for Construction, the sprinkler submittals
must be made to the governing authorities within number of days specified under Submittals.
Governing authorities may not issue full building permits until sprinkler submittals have been
submitted and approved.
3. If required, provide a Fire Department lock -box, in size, type and location as directed by local
authorities having jurisdiction.
1.07 MAINTENANCE
A. Extra Materials: For each style and temperature range required, furnish an additional two sprinkler
heads for every 100 installed units, but not less than six units of each type.
B . Emergency Head Storage Cabinet: Provide red, baked enamel, steel sprinkler cabinet to store the
extra sprinklers and wrenches, as required by NFPA 13.
PART2 PRODUCTS
2.01 MATERIALS
A. Provide materials complying with NFPA 13, "Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems ". Size
drain piping as shown, or if not shown, as required to drain the sprinkler system piping properly.
2.02 SPRINKLER PIPING
A. Underground Pipe: Class 150, UL listed, cement -lined centrifugally cast -iron iping for use in water
distribution systems (AWWA C151), manufactured in accordance with ANSI A21.51, and fittings
manufactured in accordance with ANSI 21. 10. B16.1, or B16.4. Join piping with mechanical joints.
1. Provide underground sprinkler lead -in from the public mains with minimum 8 inch diameter pipe.
B. Above Grade Pipe - Indoors:
1. Pipe Sizes 6 Inches and Smaller:
a. Pipe: Schedule 40 ASTM A -120 black steel.
b. Fittings: Class 150 malleable iron or Class 125 cast iron, threaded, ANSI 816.3 or 816.4,
or mechanical grooved pipe couplings and fittings, cut groove type.
2. Pipe Sizes 8 Inches and Larger:
a. Pipe: Schedule 30, ASTM Al 20 black steel.
b . Fittings: Class 150 malleable iron, Class 125 cast iron, or forged steel, threaded, ANSI
816.3 or 816.4., or mechanical grooved pipe couplings and fittings, cut groove type.
3. Options (When permitted by code): Schedule 10 pipe may be used on overhead sprinkler
piping for pipe 5 inches and smaller, 6 inches with 0.134" minimum wall thickness, and 8 inches
and larger with 0.188" minimum wall thickness.

2.05 VALVES
A. Provide valves where shown on the Drawings and elsewhere as specified or required lo comply with
NFPA Standards and requirements of governing authorities. Provide backflow prevention devices,
check valves, and drains where required by state or local codes. Main control valves for risers shall
be thru -wall post indicator valves.
1. Wall post indicator valves are required for all ceiling and in -rack system risers.
B. Relief Valves: Gridded sprinkler systems shall be provided with a relief valve not less than 1/4 inch
size set to operate at pressure not greater than 175 psi.

2.06 ACCESSORIES
A. Water Motor Alarm Gong: Provide 8 inch diameter water - operated alarm gong on exterior of
building adjacent to sprinkler system riser. No electric alarm gong shall be accepted.
1. Alarm Check Valve: Provide a single alarm check valve supplying manifold risers, or one on each
riser.
B . Water Flow Detectors: Equip sprinkler system riser with a vane type flow detector, Model No.
VSR -D, by Potter Electric Signal of St. Louis, Missouri, or Model No. 20- E -12 -2, by Notifier
Company of Lincoln, Nebraska. Set adjustable delayed signal at 30 seconds. The vane -type flow
detector shall be for exclusive use of Wal -Mart, Inc. Additional flow detectors will be required if other
individuals, government agencies, or companies Intend to utilize water flow detection information.
C. Control Valve Supervisory Switches: cM approved, equipped with tamper switches, Model No.
OSYS -B manufactured by Potter Efectrlo Signal of St. Louis, Missouri or acceptable substitute.
1. Post indicator valves shall be equipped with tamper switches, Model No. PIVS -B manufactured
by Potter Electric Signal of St. Louis, Missouri.
D. Fire Department Connections: Provide Fire Department connections in accordance with NFPA 13.
E. Hangers and Supports: Provide hangers and supports as roquired by NFPA 13 and by governing
authorities and UL listed. Attach piping to structural joists with support clips at edge of joist angles.
Attach piping over 2 -1/2 inches diameter at structural joist panel points only.
F. Wire Cage Sprinkler Head Guards: Fig. 6160, by Potter - Roemer or acceptable substitute.

3. Substitutions: Manufacturer's products which are UL listed and FM approved, subject to
compliance with specified requirements.
E. Make reductions in pipe sizes with one -piece reducing fittings. Bushings not acceptable, except that
when one-piece reducing fittings of proper size are not obtainable, single bushings of the face type
will be permitted up to 5 /o of total number of reducing fittings in the system. Where face bushings
are used, install with outer face flush with the face of fitting opening being reduced.
F. Couplings are not to be used except where length of pipe between fittings exceeds 20 feet.
G. Use flanged fittings in the control valve and drain assembly at base of risers and in risers of multiple
story sprinkler systems at each floor system connection. Where part of a sprinkler system is on the
opposite side of a wall or partition, a flanged connection may be used.
H. Use ground joint malleable iron unions in looped sprinkler systems where pipe is 2 inches in
diameter or smaller. Where loops larger than 2 inches are used, install companion flanges.
2.03 PIPING PRODUCTS
A. Provide factory- fabricated fire protection sprinkler piping products of the sizes and types indicated.
Where not indicated, provide products to comply with installation requirements and with NFPA 13.
Provide sizes and types to match piping and equipment connections.
2.04 SPRINKLER HEADS
A. Manufacturer: Gem Sprinkler Co., a Division of Grinnell Corp.
B. Sprinkler Heads: Standard UL listed/FM approved, soldered -link, automatic sprinklers, with 1/2" or
17/32" orifice.
1. Unoccupied Utility Areas: Duraspeed, bronze, by Gem.
2. Occupied Areas: Duraspeed, chrome, with two -piece white enamel escutcheon plate, deflector
type SSP -1, by Gem.
3. Glass Bulb type sprinkler heads, by Star Sprinkler Corp., Globe Fire Sprinkler Corp., or The
Viking Corp. are permitted as acceptable substitutes for all areas except "in -rack" sprinkler
locations.
C. Substitutions: Subject to compliance with requirements, UL listed /FM approved, one of the
following manufacturer's may be substituted for that specified above.

2.07 SLEEVES AND ESCUTCHEONS
A. Sleeves through structural concrete members and sleeves for walls below grade and floors on grade
shall be standard weight galvanized Schedule 40 steel pipe. Sleeves through other than structural
components of the building shall be 20 gage galvanized sheet metal with lock seam joints. Top of
sleeve shall be two inches above floor minimum. USG Thermatiber sating insulation shall be
installed between sleeve and pipe.
B. Escutcheon plates to be installed where exposed piping passes through walls, ceilings, and floors of
building shall be minimum 20 gage steel, chrome plated. Exposed hanger rods in finished spaces
with ceiling shall have escutcheon set screw. Split type escutcheon plates are not acceptable.
2.08 FIRE PUMP
A. Fire Pump not allowed.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATION
A. Underground Feed Main: Verify that main feed from water supply source to building is as specified.
B. Coordinate work of this Section with other affected work.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Install fire protection system in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 13 - Standard for the
installation of Sprinkler Systems. Install sprinkler piping products in accordance with recognized
industry practices to ensure that fire protection sprinkler piping complies with governing requirements
and serves the intended purposes.
B . Examine other work shown on the Drawings and conditions at the job site. Coordinate the routing of
work with other construction trades to avoid interference with other installations. Do not cut building
structural members, beams, joists, etc. for routing of sprinkler piping. In the event of conflicts, the
Wal -Mart representative shall be consulted, and his decision shall govern.
C. Pipe routing and sprinkler head :)cations shall be located as required to avoid building structure,
equipment, plumbing piping, heating and air conditioning piping, duct work, lighting fixtures, electrical
conduits and bus ducts, and similar work.
1. Final location of lighting will have priority.
2. Route piping in stockroom between wood joists or through steel joists.
3. Minimum height of sprinkler piping in sales area floor shall be 15' -0" AFF.
4. Mezzanines: Maintain spdnk:er piping minimum of T -6" AFF under mezzanines.
D. Piping drops below beams are not allowed.
E. Provide pipe offsets as required to complete the installation. Modify shop prefabricated piping,
pipe hangers, and other components as required to fit the job site conditions.
F. Shop drill and weld weld -o -lets on piping.
G. Ardi- freeze loops: Install, concealed, above ceilings.
H. Conceal piping in pipe chases, walls, furred spaces and above ceiling in areas with dropped ceilings.
I. Test Valves: Install test valves as close to eye -level as is practical.
3.03 PROTECTION OF WORK
A. This Contractor shall protect his work at all times from danger by freezing, breakage, dirt, foreign

protect the work of others, and will be held responsible for all damage to other work caused by his
work or through the neglect of his workmen.

3.04 IDENTIFICATION
A. Apply signs to controls, and drain, test and alarm valves to identify their purposes and functions.
Provide lettering sizes and styles selected by the Wal -Mart Construction Manager from NFPA's
suggested styles. Provide hydraulic placard for each sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA 13.
3.05 CLEANING AND FLUSHING
A. Prior to connecting sprinkler piping for flushing, flush water feed mains, lead -in connections and control
portions of sprinkler piping. After fire sprinkler piping installation has been completed, and before
piping is placed in service, flush entire sprinkler system under pressure, as required to remove
foreign substances as required by NFPA 13. Continue flushing until water is clear, and check to
ensure that debris has not clogged sprinklers.
3.06 TESTING
A. Notify CIGNA Loss Control Services at (312)380 -8281 two weeks prior to any fire pump acceptance
test so a representative may witness the testing.
B . After flushing system, test fire sprinkler piping hydrostatically in accordance with NFPA 13, at not less
than 200 psig, or at 50 psig in excess of normal operating pressure when normal operating pressure
is in excess of 150 psig. Check system for leakage at joints. Measure hydrostatic pressure at low
point of each system or zone being tested. Send completed copy of the material and test certificate
to CIGNA Loss Control Services, 8755 W. Higgins Road, Chicago, IL, 60631.
C. Repair or replace pipinq system as required to eliminate leakage accordance with NFPA Standardsfor "little or no leakage' , and retest as specified to demonstrate compliance.
