Protecting Duct and Plenum on Local Application Systems On systems requiring focal application protection in the work area, the duct and plenum can be protected utilizing a PCI.35ABC system with three nozzles. N -DCT nozzle must be located on T1 to nozzle branch. ULEX 3437 CEx732 September 29. 1998 Suggested Architect's Specifications 1. General 1.1 The fire extinguishing system shall be the stored pressure dry chemical pre - engineered fixed nozzle type manufactured by Pyro- Chem. The system shall provide for the protection of the paint spray area(s) described in drawing . (Note drawing number and revision.) 1.2 The system shall be capable of automatic and manual actua- tion. It shall be U.L Listed and installed in conformance with National Fire Protection Association Standard No. 17, 'Dry Chem- ical Extinguishing Systems' and No_ 33, 'Spray Application using Flammable and Combustible Materials,' and comply with all local and/or state Codes and Standards. 1.3 The system shall be designed for operation at ambient tem- peraftmas from 32°F to +120 °F. 2. Cylinder and Agent 2.1 - Agent. The system shall use Pyro-Chem monoammonium phosphate -based dry chemical agent 22 - Cylinders. Steel cylinders manufactured, tested, and marked in accordance with DOT 48 350 or DOT 48 500 shall be used to store the extinguishing agent Cylinder Models PCI -15ABC shall be used with extinguishing agent fill weight of 12.5 lbs. Cylinder Models PCI -17ABC shall be used with extinguishing agent fill weight of 17 lbs. Cylinder Models PCI- 25sABC shall be used with extinguishing agent fill weight of 25 lbs. Cylinder Models PCI - 35ABC shall be used with extinguishing agent fill weight of 35 tbs. Cylinder Models PCI -70ABC shall be used with extinguishing agent fill weight of 70 tbs. All models are charged with dry nitrogen to 350 psig at 70 °F 2.3 - Cylinder valve. A pressure sealed poppet -type valve having a brass body, stainless steel stem with rubber seat washer, fusible safety relief assembty, and pressure gage shall be used on all agent cylinders. 2.4 - Cylinder bracketing. Cylinders shall be mounted vertically. The cylinders shall be secured by use of a steel mounting bracket affixed to a rigid object capable of supporting the weight of the filled cylinder and the concussion of cylinder discharge. 3. Actuation Controls 3.1 - Control Head. The system control head shall include a Model MCH, NMCH or ECH - Series Contra] Head. The control head shall be mounted directly on the valve of the agent cylinder (for single cylinder systems), in a Model MB-P2 control head mounting brack- et (for actuating up to three centrally located agent cylinders) or directly on the vatve of a pneumatic actuating cylinder. A carbon dioxide pilot cartridge that complies with MIL- C8601G shall be used as an integral component of the control head. Control head status shaft be visually endreated by a SET/FIRED indicator. 32 - Time Delay. The system sW have a Model T -10 Time Delay lo allow for fan shut down before agent discharge. 3.3 - Detection. The ambient temperature of the hazard area shall be monitored by fixed temperature mechanical or electrical thermal detectors. When the temperature of the hazard area exceeds the rating of any detector, the detector shall a) release tension in a cable connected to the control head, causing control head activation (for mechanical detectors), or b) close a normally open switch element within the detector, sending a signal to the control head which energizes a solenoid in the control head, exer- cising the control head (for electrical detectors). . 3.4 - Pneumatic actuation. For systems requiring more than three agent cylinders, the system shall have a PAC -Series Pneumatic Actuating Cylinder whose valve opens upon activation of the con- trol head. The valve shall release- nitrogen from the PAC cylinder into the pneumatic pipe and tubing network. This nitrogen shall depress a piston above the valve stem in each agent cylinder, opening each agent cylinder valve and releasing the pressurized agent 3.5 - Manual actuation. The system shall have mechanical manu- al actuation capability requiring no electrical power. This is accom- plished locally by twisting the handle on the cover of the MCH or ECH Control Head, or remotely by means of a Model RPS -M remote mechanical pull station. 3.6 - Auxiliary output. The system shall shut off power to all fuel dispensing units in the event of system actuation. This is accom- plished by means of dry contacts on a Model MS -SPDT or MS- DPDT miniature switch installed in the control head. The miniature switch may also be used for auxiliary functions such as audible alarms or alarm signaling. 3.7 - Supervision. A Model SM Series Solenoid Monitor shall be used to supervise the integrity of all electrical actuation circuits, whether automatic or manual. 3.8 - Manual electrical actuation (optional). The system shall have electrical manual actuation capability. This is accomplished by the use of a Model RPS -E2 Remote Electrical Pull Station installed in the automatic detection circuit. 4. Distribution Nozzles 4.1 - Nozzles. The system shall utilize Pyro -Chem discharge noz- zles to distribute agent throughout the hazard area. The model, quantity, location, and orientation of nozzles shall be' in accor- dance with Pyro-Chem Industrial Fire Suppression Systemy7 Technical Manual, Part No. PC 98200. 42 - Nozzle covers. All nozzles shall be installed with nozzle cov- ers to prevent foreign matter from clogging the discharge nozzles. 5. Pipe and Fittings 5.1 - Pipe. All pipe shall be Schedule 40 black, galvanized, chrome plated or stainless steel pipe in compliance with NFPA 17. All pipe ends shall be thoroughly reamed after cutting, and all oil, chips, and debris shall be removed prior to nozzle installation. 52 - Fittings. Standard weight malleable, galvanized, chrome plat- ed or stainless steel fittings shall be used. 5.3 - Size. All system pipe and fittings will be sized in accordance with the system Technical Manual. No substitutions are allowed. 5.4 - Joints. No joint sealant shall be used in the discharge piping. Exception: Teflon tape may be used to ensure a snug fit. 5.5 - Straps. All system discharge pipe shall be securely fastened by means of pipe hangers and/or pipe straps. UL Listed pipe hang- ers shall be used. 5.6 - Union. A union shall be installed in the discharge piping con- veniently dose to the cylinder valve to permit disconnection for inspection and service. CHAPTER III SYSTEM DESIGN General Pyro -Chem Industrial Open Face Paint Spray Booth Fire Suppression System has been designed and tested for use in open face paint spray booth applications. The guidelines listed in this chapter deal with the limitations and parame- ters of various system configurations. It is the responsibility of the Certified installer to ensure that the proper system design is being utilized, and -that the system meets the limi- tations and parameters listed in this chapter. Before attempting to design any system, it is necessary to attend a Factory Certification Training Class and become Certified to install Pyro -Chem Industrial Open Face Paint Spray Booth Fire Suppression Systems. Choosing the Proper Agent It is necessary for the system designer to consider the com- bustible material found in the hazard area to ensure proper protection. The agent used in the system must be approved for the hazard class of the combustible material. The follow- ing are the hazard classes: A" Class — Ordinary solid carbonaceous combustibles. These include wood, paper, cloth, fiberglass, and plastics B" Class — Flammable liquids and gases. These include paints, solvents, gasoline, oils, and hydraulic fluids. C" Class — Electrical appliances. These include comput- ers, power generators, and power transformers. D" Class — Combustible metals such as sodium, potassi- um; magnesium, titanium, and zirconium. The Pyro -Chem Industrial Open Face Paint Booth Fire Suppression System is not intended to protect Class D hazards. The following guidelines should be used for determining the proper agent: ABC (monoammanium phosphate - based) — for use with all `A' `B; and `C' Class hazards. As per NFPA 17, pre - engineered dry chemical systems are not approved for deep - seated or burrowing fires (such as ordinary combustibles where the agent cannot reach the point of combustion), or on chemicals that contain their own oxygen supply (such as cellulose nitrate). Do not mix differ- ent types of agents, or agents from different manufacturers. Chemical reactions may occur when incompatible chemicals are mixed. Keep in mind that the agent must be accept- able to the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Chapter 3 — System Design Page 3 -1 REV. 2 Choosing the Proper Type of System It is necessary for the system designer to consider the physical characteristics and layout of the hazard area to ensure proper protection. The hazard area must meet the criteria for a particular system for that system to be effec- tive. The hazard area must be protected in accordance with NFPA 17 for proper protection. The following guidelines are used to determine the proper system for a hazard: Local Application — Overhead — This system is used for applying agent to an area from above the area. The maxi- mum nozzle height for overhead protection is 10.5 feet for ABC coverage. Total Flooding —This system is used to fill a volume with agent to protect any hazard within that volume. Total flood- ing systems require that an enclosure be present around the hazard area to allow the system to build up the proper concentration of agent within the hazard area. The Pyro -Chem Model N -SCR screening nozzle has been tested and approved by Underwriters Laboratories for unclosable openings. The nozzle will protect an area eight 8) feet wide at a height of twelve (12) feet. The ventilation system must be shut down before or simul- taneously with the discharge of the system. Total Flooding a. Cylinders: The Models PCI- 15ABC, PCI- 25sABC, PCI- 35ABC, PCI- 50sABC, and PCI -70ABC cylinders can be used for open face paint spray booth applications. b. Nozzles: Four nozzles are available for use in protecting open face paint spray booths: Nozzle Application N -SCR Screening the opening N-OTF Work Area (Overhead Position) N -PLU Plenum Area (Overhead Position) N -DCT Duct c. Temperature Range: The operating temperature range for open face booth appli- cations is 32 OF to 120 °F (0 °C. to 48 °C.). See the following pages for specific piping design and limitations for each size cylinder. e. Nozzle Placement: The nozzle is to be mounted in the center (See Note) of the protected area, with the discharge holes in the nozzle no greater than six (6) inches from the ceiling. For duct protec- tion, the nozzle is to be mounted in the center. See Figure 3 -1.
