Planned for construction is a complexs of light industrial tilt -up buildings. the structures are to be supported on conventional continuous and pad footings with si.ab -on -grade concrete floors. Reference should be made to the Geotechnical Iiivestigation as prepared by this firm on September 28, 1983. Please refer to the letter evaluating the current conditiois on the site, dated December 12, 1908. FIELD TESTING AND OBSERVATIONS As part of the clearing operation, all vegetation and debris were removed from the site. Approximately 90 lineral feet of leach line was removed to a depth ranging from 5.5 to 5.5 feet. The line was capped about five feet outside the building line as shown on the enclosed map. The grading of these building sites included the fnilowing: 1. In the area of Building 1, the existing ground was undercut to a depth of two feet and the exposed surface sca.ified and compacted to a depth of 12 inches. 2. In the area of Building 2, approximately 3 feet of old fill was removed as shown on the enclosed plans. Next, the existing ground, as projected from the area south of the bui_i.dng, was undercut to a depth of two feet and the exposed surface scarified and compacted to a depth of 12 inches. 3. The limits of rough grading extended to a minimum of five feet outside the building lines except for the eastern portion Qf Building 1 which was graded to 5 feet inside the building 'Line due to interference with an existing building. v t Page 2 Job No. 3840 The fill was placed in four to six inch lifts and compacted by means of wheelrolling with loaded 760 John Deere scrapers. The required moisture was supplied by a 1500 gallon water truck. The fill material consisted of both on -site and imported soils which are classified as silty sands. The density of the soils was deterit.ined in accordance with A.S.T.M. Test Method:- D -1556 and D -2937. The test results were compared to the maximum density as determined in accordance with A.S.T.M. Test Method D -1557. The results of the tests are presented on the attached "Table of Tess. Results" with their approximate locations shown on thv attached plot plan. LABORATORY TESTING Tests for volume change with moisture were performed on compacted soil in accordance with the UBC Test Standard 29 -2. The maximum density of the soil was determined in accordance with A.S.T.M. Test Method D -1557. The concentration of soluble sulfates in the soil was determined by A.E.T.M. Test Method D -516 Method A and is expressed as a percentage by weight of dry soil tested. REMARK =AND RECOMMENDATIONS Footings and Bearing Footings may be designed for an allowable bearing value of 1800 pounds per square foot provided they are placed to a minimum width of 12 inches and a minimum depth of 18 inches below the lowest adjacent final grade. An increase of 1/3 of the above bearing value is permissible for short duration loading. Concrete Slab Construction is recommended that concrete floor slabs 4,n areas to be covered with moisture sensitive coverings be constructed over a 6 mil plastic membrane. The plastic membrane should be properly lapped, sealed, and protected with sand. It is cautioned that concrete slabs in areas to receive ceramic tile or other crack sensitive: floor coverings must be designed and constructed to minimize hairline cracking. t t Job No. 3840 Expansion Page 3 The results of tests indicate that the soils existing on the site possess very low expansion potential. The results are as follows: As z result, no special corsruction considerations are necessary due to expansion poter.__:.l. Soluble Sulfates Tb,a results of tests show that the on -site soils possess negligible concentrations of soluble sulfates. The results of tests are as follows: Sample % Soluble Location Sulfates Building 1 O.C.46 Building 2 0.013 A soluble sulfate content less than 0.10 percent is not considered detrimental to standard concrete mixes. As a result, no special Hype concrete or construction is considered necessary for soluble sulfates for this project. Limits of Reporting This report covers the grading performed between the dates of January 2:3, 1989 through February 18, 1989. General The grading performed on this site was done in an acceptable manner and in conformance with the Geotechnical Investigation. The results of testing indicate that the fill has been compacted to at least 90 percent of maximum density. Based on test results and observations made by this firm, it is the opinion of this engineer that this project is suitable for the construction of the proposed industrial tilt -up buildings. Aggregate Base for Pavement GRADING AND COMPACTION Sewer -Trenches The off -site sewer trenchez within Chaney Street and Collier Avenue were excavated to depths ranging from 8 to 16 feet. The conduits were shaded with two to three feet of 3/4 -inch crushed rock and then backfilled with on -site silty sands. The backfill soils were placed in two feet lifts, moisture conditioned with a water truck and 'nose and then compacted by means of a backhee with a sheepsfoot wheel. The trenches were backf with on -site silty sands, moisture conditioned with a water truck and compacted with a stomper. Common Trenches The common trenches, =which contain. cc.aduits for electric and telephone, were excavated to a dept!, of four feet and a width of two feet. One footof sand shad *-ng was placed above the conduit and the remaining portions backfilled with on -site silty sands. The silty sands were placed in three foot 3if-s, jetted with a water hose, and compacted with a stomper. Gas Trenches The gas lines were placed in trenches three feet wide and two feet deep. The trenches were backfilled with on -site silty sands in six inch lifts. The backfill soils were moisture conditioned with a water hose and compacted by means of a stomper.
