COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
AGENDA REPORT
TO: Grant Yates, City Manager
FROM: Johnathan O. Skinner, Community Services Director
DATE: September 15, 2015
SUBJECT: Community Services Department Monthly Report
PREPARED BY: Melissa Houtz, Special Events Coordinator
RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file.
BACKGROUND: The following provides a summary of the Community Services
Department's programs, activities and events for August
2015.
VOLUNTEERS
We are currently recruiting clerical volunteers for the following departments; City Clerk's
Office, Public Works, Building, Engineering and Community Services. The Human
Resources department is working to review the template for the Volunteer Handbook.
COMMUNITY CENTER
August recreation programming saw the conclusion of the aquatics season and a
successful one it was with an increased participation in swimming lessons and public
swim. May of our recreation classes enjoyed a short summer break using the month of
august to reset their programs and gear up for the new school year. Even with the
reduced schedule the City still had over six thousand visitors and processed $23,000 it
recreation class revenue. September will see new classes and special events and our
fall/ winter City Activity Guide.
SENIOR CENTER
Services during the month of August included; Mobile Fresh, Legal Advice, bread
distribution, Notary and we served 562 lunches.
Workshops for the month of August included; Eye Care, Diabetes, Health Literacy,
Protect your Assets and Environmental Safety,
The Senior Center once again served as a "Cool Center ". Seniors took advantage of
saving on their electric bill by spending the day in our air conditioned facility.
We took a trip to Pala Casino on August 3 with 48 seniors in attendance. The seniors
are anxious for the next trip.
Our annual Tropic Luau on August 26 with a full 48 present, which included Ham &
Pineapple luncheon by Sodexo, our nutrition site provider; Hawaiian Dancers "Na Hula
Makules" paid for by our sponsor Millicent Anderson, who also brought in authentic
items from Hawaii for door prizes; special dessert and gift items, and door prizes from
local merchants. It was a very successful event.
The C -TAP program provided information on Free Telephones available and how to
qualify for this free service to 19 participants.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Equity Management hosted the Annual National Night Out event at McVicker Canyon
Park in collaboration with the Riverside Sheriff's Department and City of Lake Elsinore.
The community was able to speak with local officers, enjoy kid friendly activities and
check out many exhibits that was provided by the Riverside Sheriff's Department,
The Community Services Department hosted their last Summer Movie Night for the
season at Summerlake Park and brought in 200 people in attendance. Families were
able to bring their blankets, chairs and snacks and watch "Maleficent ".
EJP International hosted their second music festival at La Laguna Resort and Boat
Launch featuring Latin music with 5,000 people in attendance for the weekend. This
event was from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on
