BACKGROUND: The following provides a summary of the Lake, Parks & Recreation Department's programs, activities and events for April 2013: Administration Manager attended a Film Screening of "Wretches & Jabberers" a documentary featuring two adult men with autism who embark on a global quest to change prevailing attitudes about disability and intelligence. The screening was held at the Old Town Theater in Temecula on April 3`d as part of Autism Awareness Month. In addition, the Manager attended a Regional Family Youth Health Task Force meeting on April 29th at the Temecula City Hall Chambers. The Task Force is currently comprised of 24 elected leaders from eight cities and eight School Districts. The primary focus of the Task Force is to provide youth, parents and families in the region with resources and information to better understand and cope with modern -day influences. The topic of discussion for this kickoff meeting was gaming addictions. Parks & Facilities Parks staff provided event support at the Children's Fair at McVicker Park and the 5K Run/Walk on the levee; completed renovations to the City's suite at the Diamond Stadium; renovated and reseeded the entire athletic fields at Lakepoint Park to provide a higher standard field for the user groups; completed the Senior Center Parking Lot Renovation project; retro fit athletic field lights at McVicker Canyon, Lakepoint, Swick & Matich, and Tuscany Hills Park to remove any potential safety hazards caused by malfunctioning or broken field lights; performed final walkthroughs and full acceptance of Canyon Hills Park from Pardee Homes. Recreation The Unity in the Community Run/Walk had over 800 participants in the 5K, 10K, and Children's Fun Run events. Eleven (11) schools set up booths and eight (8) vendors offered free samples of gourmet health foods, health supplements and water. There were 80 volunteers and approximately 1,300 spectators in attendance. The Unity in the Community Parade had a new reversed route beginning on Heald Avenue and ending on Graham Avenue. Parade organizers with well over 40 volunteers managed a safe and exciting 125`h year event. There were 64 parade entries that joined in the fun. Special Events in April: 4/6 - Smoking Tires & Campfires Car Show at La Laguna Resort 4/6 & 4/7- Warrior Dash 5K Mud Run at the Stadium /Levee 4/11 -4/14- Frontier Days Carnival at the La Laguna Resort 4/12 - Lucas Oil Regional Race at the L.E. Motorsports Park 4/19 - Ragnar Relay passed through Lake Elsinore 4/20- Unity 5K/1 OK Walk /Run at the Stadium /Levee 4/27- JDRF Walk for the Cure at Stadium /Levee. 4/27- Unity in the Community Parade along Main Street, Graham & Heald Upcoming Special Events for June: 6/1 — Just for Kids Fishing Derby at Stadium /Levee 6/1 — Arbor Day Volunteer in the Parks project at the Senior Center 6/1 — So. Cal INT - Tentative 6/21 — Canyon Lake Wakeboard Club at the Inlet Channel /Levee 6/22 — Ribbon Cutting /Dedication at Rosetta Canyon Fire Station • 6/26 — Movies in the Parks summer series begins at Summerlake Park Terra Cotta Gym & Lake Community Center Total attendance for the month of April was 5,079 with 1,364 customer service calls. Skate Park Facility The Skate Park had 3 rentals in the month of April. Total attendance of BMX, Skateboarders and Scooters was 359 and 22 new waivers were signed. Senior Center • Attendance: Monthly attendance /service contacts totaled 3,696 in April, with 22 days of operations, equaling a daily average of 168. • TrjpS: The Smart Walkers took a trip to Dos La os on April 15` and we conducted two "Historic Tours of Lake Elsinore" on April 10w in a cooperative venture with the Lake Elsinore Historical Society to celebrate the 125`h. On April 24`h the Smart Walkers visited Harveston in Temecula for a "Walk & Picnic." Fundraisers: In April we had 48 participate in the Spring Party, netting $144; book sales netted $45; the April computer class was 7 students @$5 for $35; and Rae Ann did 15 haircuts @ $7 for $105. • Nutrition & Events: April lunches served totaled 497. We have been allocated 23 per day from the Office on Aging and have agreed to subsidize any amount above that number that is served to our patrons. With 22 days of operation and an allocation of 23 per day, we had 506 lunches available. Thus we did not have to subsidize any lunches in Aril. We had catered our Spring Celebration and 125th Birthday Party on April 17 h with 48 patrons in attendance and entertainment provided by the "Happy Hours Singers ". All our instructors provided free classes (Yoga, Tai Chi, Line Dance, and Self- Defense) the week of April 8th, and our Art class has several displays of their work in the Main Room at the Center. • Services: We concluded our income tax services on April 15th. Our site filed 247 Federal and 242 State tax returns and netted $440 in donations for the 2012 tax season. In addition a number of patrons were provided paper returns (ratherthan e- filed) and previous tax years were completed for some of the patrons that are not included in the above statistics. We had only one volunteer at our site and those statistics were tremendous under those circumstances. The program is provided by the Community Action Partnership of Riverside County and Charles Clinton was our site volunteer. Lake Installed an irrigation system, containing water cannons, to maintain the newly planted Burrow site and T- peninsula planting project; installed new sign markers for lake location at the La Laguna Resort and Boat Launch. Worked with Commercial Divers to replace anchor - cables on all Axial Flow Pump Docking Stations. City of Lake Elsinore Special Events May 20 - June 30, 2013 Mon — Fri Public Works Week May 20 — 24 City Yard 521 North Langstaff Street Lake Elsinore, CA 92530 The City of Lake Elsinore will be recognizing the 2013 National Public Works week. In celebration, the Public Works Department will host an Open House and a free BBQ on Tuesday, May 215 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the City Yard. The goal is to clean up and improve the landscaped areas at the Senior Center.
