HomeMy WebLinkAboutID# 15-707 Arts & Culture Ad Hoc SubcommitteeCITY OF LADE r (C6 giLSiTOf-kE DREAM EXI'luml:- REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: GRANT YATES, CITY MANAGER DATE: JULY 28, 2015 SUBJECT: ARTS AND CULTURE AD HOC SUBCOMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION Recommendation for City Council to create an Arts and Culture Ad Hoc Subcommittee and for the Mayor to appoint two City Council members to serve on the Ad Hoc Sub Committee. BACKGROUND At the July 14, 2015 City Council meeting during City Council Comments, Mayor Manos briefly discussed a recommendation to form an Ad Hoc Committee to work with the local art community to enhance arts and culture in Lake Elsinore. The Mayor attended the Studio 395 Board meeting and discussed possibilities for the organization and the City to work together to expand current offerings and support activities of the organization for the betterment of the community. DISCUSSION Studio 395 has been an active body in the City for several years, creating such activities as "3rd Saturdays," murals throughout downtown including the historic "Grand Prix" mural on The Wreck, produced art projects throughout the community, developed and ARTS AND CULTURE AD HOC SUB COMMITTEE July 28, 2015 Page 2 implemented a very successful "Day of the Dead" festival, and brought an art component to the City's "Winterfest" holiday event. The organization has been in continued communications with City staff to increase the partnership and bring many more events, activities and artists to Lake Elsinore. The Ad Hoc Committee would team with Council, staff and Studio 395 to identify potential resources to increase arts and culture to an "art hungry" community. This Ad hoc Sub Committee will stay in effect through the remainder of the 2015 calendar year and the need to continue with this will be evaluated when the assignments for the 2016 Committees are discussed.
