Skinner, Community Services Director DATE: January 15, 2015 SUBJECT: Community Services Monthly Report PREPARED BY: Vicky Saavedra, Community Services Office Specialist. RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file. BACKGROUND: The following provides a summary of the Community Services Department's programs, activities and events for December 2014, VOLUNTEERS We currently are recruiting volunteers for the "Breaking Records for Charities" event that will be held on January 17, 2015, at the Lake Elsinore Storm Stadium. We also are recruiting clerical volunteers for City Hall and the Senior Center. The current total of volunteer applications submitted for the 2014 year is 90. The total includes, 41 adults and 49 youths. COMMUNITY CENTER Lake Elsinore Little League registration was held at the Lake Community Center on December 7. Second Harvest Food Bank hosted their Brown Bag event Thursday, December 11, which services seniors and people with disabilities. Our Early Learners program had their holiday party on December 17 and 18. Mrs. Hancock, the Ballet Folklorico instructor, hosted her annual holiday party on December 18. The Tiny Tots Preschool program hosted their holiday party on December 22. The Community Center staff held our first "Winter Camp" during the winter break and it was successful, it brought in 40 campers. SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER There was a Therapy Dog available for seniors to visit at the center, interesting information was handed out and the seniors enjoyed it. The seniors also enjoyed the "Christmas Gift and Craft" class that was taught by Nancy Martin, each senior went home with their own gift box. The Pechanga Casino trip had 43 senior attend this month. We had 18 volunteers attend the annual Holiday Volunteer Recognition at Lone Star Steakhouse. "The Smart Walkers," a group of about 30 active seniors had their walking excursion at the Santa Rosa Plateau and at Dos Lagos Lakes. The Community Services Department provided a Christmas lunch for the seniors with plenty of food for all. SPECIAL EVENT On December 6, the Community Services Department hosted their annual "Winterfest" event with nearly 10,000 people in attendance. This event included a first time holiday parade with 28 groups, 44 merchandise booths, 6 food vendors, jump houses, entertainment from our local middle and high schools, free train rides, sled runs and visits with Santa. The Community Services Department also held two "Breakfast with Santa" events, which were held at Station 85 and Station 10 on December 13 and 20. Both events were sold out with a total of 128 participants. The tickets included a pancake and sausage breakfast, a visit from Santa and families were able to enjoy holiday craft making and a fire station tour. SKATE PARK The total attendance at the skate park for the month of December was 493. We had 3 rentals and 54 new waivers filled out. This report covers the months of August through September 2014. The meeting of July 2014 was canceled. Listed below are the current members of this Commission: Jay Stewart, Chairperson Stephen Gregory, Vice - Chairman Chris Hyland, Commissioner Myles Ross, Commissioner Valerie Sund, Commissioner The Commission has held five regular meetings since March 2014. Two meetings were canceled in July and October. These meetings involved several key aspects regarding the safety of the City. Listed below are the presentations, future priorities, and actions taken during the course of these meetings. PRESENTATIONS: • Riverside Transit Agency Update Regarding City Bus Stops • Fire Update — Quint Fire Truck Tour • Shake Out Expo 2014 • Riverside County Sheriff's Online Property Crime Reporting Service • Main Street Truck Route and Vendor Delivery Concerns ACTIONS TAKEN: • Established and Appointed Commission Ad -hoc Subcommittee for projects related to Public Transportation and Sidewalks: This Subcommittee includes two Commissioners, Commissioner Hyland and Commissioner Sund, that will participate in the City's efforts to improve our sidewalks and bus stops. Staff will be coordinating with this committee as the City moves forward with a sidewalk survey and determining a future capital improvement project for our bus stops. • Reviewed and discussed the Riverside County Sheriff's Online Property Crime Reporting Service. Suggestions were made for ways to actively promote this service in our community. • Reviewed and discussed the existing truck routes in the downtown area and Main Street and complaints regarding truck deliveries to businesses on Main Street. The Commission offered recommendations to staff for addressing concerns with truck deliveries on Main Street and the usage or non -usage of truck routes in the downtown area.
