Skinner, Community Services Director DATE: December 1, 2014 SUBJECT: Community Services Monthly Report PREPARED BY: Vicky Saavedra, Community Services Office Specialist RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file. BACKGROUND: The following provides a summary of the Community Services Department's programs, activities and events for November 2014. VOLUNTEERS We currently are recruiting volunteers for our Winterfest event that will be held on December 6, at the Lake Community Center. We also are recruiting clerical volunteers for City Hall and the Senior Center. The current total of volunteer applications submitted for the 2014 year is 89. The total includes, 41 adults and 48 youths. COMMUNITY CENTER Second Harvest Food Bank hosted their Brown Bag event Thursday, November 13 which services seniors and people with disabilities. SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER The County of Riverside District Attorney's Office offered a workshop on "Abuse in Later Life" on Wednesday, November 5 with 14 seniors in attendance. Free Vein Screening was offered on Friday, November 7 by UIC Vein Center to 28 participants. Educational materials were provided to each of the participants to alert them of the issues that the test was checking for. A volunteer donated handmade knitted caps to Veterans in honor of their services on Veteran's Day. The trip to Canterbury Gardens was on Wednesday, November 12 included 13 seniors who had a wonderful time shopping and having lunch at the Center City Cafe. Legal advice was provided for 5 seniors this month by Anita Cheek - Milner. Instructor Gustavo Poletti offered free Yoga and Tai Chi demonstration classes to allow those interested to learn more about the programs. Other services included HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program) and Mobile Fresh, whom visited with fresh fruits and vegetables. Our annual Thanksgiving Meal was provided by Sodexo, our daily nutrition provider. It was held on Thursday, November 20 with 55 in attendance. SPECIAL EVENT The third annual Day of the Dead continues to expand each year with many vendors and spectators. The event was held on November 1, in Historic Downtown on Main Street. This year a Beer & Wine Garden along with a parade were added to the event. There was 3,000 in attendance who celebrated the life of family and friends who are not forgotten. On November 8 and 9 the Storm Stadium hosted their 44th Grand Prix event with over 1,000 participants and 10,000 spectators. On November 15 and 16 the Rockefellas Bar from Corona hosted their first of many concerts at the Storm Stadium with 3,000 in attendance for the weekend. The lineup consisted of local tribute bands for Journey, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and many more. SKATE PARK The total attendance at the skate park for the month of November was 450.
