Subject: news article re military memorial
I read the news from nctimes.com about the agenda item to establish a physical memorial.
I do not think this is a good idea; the costs approved are just too much.
As with all memorials and monuments, after the initial interest is over the site deteriorates and requires
maintenance; meaning more costs from the city budget. I have seen this happen with other cities where
I lived: the monument is broken and /or vandalized. Unless it is kept spotless - -all the time - -it becomes an
embarrassment to the city residents.
Additionally, will it be considered a work of art? This will require permission from the artist to refurbish
or improve. I saw this happen to a HOA in Brea; they were not permitted to maintain the ordinance -
required art form in their common area without active participation from the artist. The cost of
repainting was multiple times a painting contractor's bid.
I very much approve of honoring the military; but cannot this be done in a more "living" way? Perhaps
at each city /community event to present a thoughtful tribute of gratitude? Wouldn't this result in keeping
servicemen and women in the public mind frequently as the press always covers local news? I'm sure
the military service organizations would be very glad to send a representative to events.
We ought not to move away from educating the public in a meaningful way; when was the last time you
heard the entire Declaration of Independence read aloud at a holiday celebration? It used to be done as
a tradition in generations past. Surely we may find something similar to honor those who gave the
greatest sacrifice.
I wish to have a reply to this message from council.
Thank you.

Re: Ad hoc committee
Last month I attended the City Planning committee meeting where we discussed an
ad hoc committee on Historical Preservation for Lake Elsinore. Joyce Hoenadle, R.H.C.,
Dist. I.( yes, there is two of us for this area,) and myself were asked if we would consider
being on the ad hoc committee if the City Counsel approved it. Of course we agreed.
I came to Lake Elsinore as a child, vacationing and have lived here for over 25 years.
I have 10 years experience with the Riverside Historical Preservation Commission and
have been a member of Lake Elsinore Historical Society for 20 years.
Approximately six years ago when the building boom was on, I discussed forming a
Historical Preservation Committee through the Historical Society with Councilmen
Buckley, to protect our Historical Buildings and Landmarks, unfortunately it never took
place. I'm very pleased this need is being recognized.
Thank you for your consideration,
Charlene Cleary, Commissioner

Dear City Counsel,
I recently read the enclosed article int the Press Enterprise regarding the establishment of an ad hoc
committee to recognize old buildings and sites for historical preservation. I would be very interested
in serving on this committee.
I do not have any formal training on the preservation of historical buildings but I do have a sincere
interest.
I am a hard working, highly organized office manager for Western Safety Associates in Corona, CA. I
am sure I could put my organizational skills to good use serving on this committee.
I would love to be considered for one of these five positions.
Sinc rely,
Jennifer Leit
