HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Reso No 2014-063 Healthy Active CommunityRESOLUTION NO. 2014 -063 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKE ELSINORE, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF A HEALTHY ACTIVE COMMUNITY WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lake Elsinore supports policies that focus on health and wellness and healthier lifestyles in all communities; and WHEREAS, many agencies have adopted policies and programs that promote healthy lifestyles by making their communities walkable, promoting physical activity, encouraging access to fresh foods and vegetables in city, county, or school facilities; and WHEREAS, there are important, long -term community benefits to be gained by encouraging healthy lifestyles, including a decrease in the rate of obesity and its negative health - related impacts and cost; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lake Elsinore and other community partners can work together to understand the relationship between obesity, land -use policies, development, and community planning; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lake Elsinore and other community partners can work together to ensure that there are safe places for residents to be active such as parks, ball fields, pools, gyms, and recreation centers; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lake Elsinore supports the development of healthy neighborhoods that provide places where walking and bicycling are safe and convenient for all residents; locally grown, affordable, accessible and nutritious food; and a place where residents live in a clean, optimal environment free of hazards or pollutants; and WHEREAS, our health is affected by where we live, work and play; and in order for our communities to be healthy, we need to live in healthy communities; and WHEREAS, regional collaboration leads to developing and forging strong relationships, enabling communities to maximize resources ensuring that healthier community development occurs; and WHEREAS, local schools play a significant role in enhancing neighborhood health and safety, the city should commit to provide continuous support in assuring that children have safe routes to schools. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Lake Elsinore, California, does hereby resolve as follows: City Council Resolution No. 2014 -063 Page 2 of 2 SECTION 1. All city departments and agencies are encouraged to: (A) Promote and support active transportation and physical activity; (B) Support joint use of facilities throughout communities in Riverside County which enhance physical activity; and (C) Develop policies to provide access to healthy and affordable foods; and SECTION 2. The City of Lake Elsinore will work with other cities, County departments, community partners, and regional agencies to adopt preventive measures, develop initiatives and programs to fight obesity and chronic disease, and create or support existing coalitions, such as the Riverside County Health Coalition, which collectively advance community health and wellness. SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after the date of its passage and adoption.
