LAKE, PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT AGENDA REPORT TO: City Manager FROM: Pat Kilroy, Director of Lake, Parks & Recreation DATE: February 18, 2014 SUBJECT: Lake, Parks & Recreation Monthly Report PREPARED BY: Mary Santa Cruz, Office Specialist RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file. BACKGROUND: The following provides a summary of the Lake, Parks & Recreation Department's programs, activities and events for January 2014: Administration The Department Manager attended a series of meetings to discuss the Murrieta Creek Trail and how the trail can potentially be extended through the jurisdictions of Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Murrieta and Temecula. The Regional Family, Youth & Health Task Force meeting was held on 1/16 and the consensus of the group was that the presentations and discussions proved very valuable to our communities; therefore, the meetings will continue with new topics. Staff attended the Western Riverside Energy Leader Partnership meeting on 1/23 to obtain updates on the program and provided WRCOG with upcoming Special Event dates for their community outreach opportunities. Recreation Special Events for February 2/15 — 2/17 AKC Agility Trials 2/17 & 2/18 Good Vibes Music Festival Upcoming Special Events for March 3/30 Skate Park Anniversary Party Terra Cotta Gym & Lake Community Center Total attendance for the month of January was 3,916 with 1,045 customer service calls. Skate Park Facility The Skate Park had 3 rentals in the month of January. Total attendance of BMX, Skateboarders and Scooters was 887 and 89 new waivers were signed. Senior Center Attendance: Monthly attendance / service contacts for January totaled 2,679, with 21 days of operation, averaging 175 daily attendance. The Center serves from 50 - 80 persons daily, however each patron may participate in multiple programs. The attendance figures are derived from the sum of the attendance sign -in sheets from each of the daily activities. If a patron participates in several activities each day, they will be counted multiple times. The Center offers multiple activities every day. Publication: The Senior News for February is currently available for pick up and is posted on -line. Trips: We had 40 participants at the Valley View Casino trip on January 23rd. Although attendance was lower than for most of our Casino Trips, we anticipated this due to the time of year and the increased cost for this particular trip since we had to recover the cost for the bus rental usually paid for by the Casino. Valley View does not provide bus transportation, however we have a lot of request to attend this casino so we offer the program once a year. Our department vehicle is still not available to use, so we have no other trips scheduled for February or March. Nutrition and Events: The Office on Aging was limiting the number of meals served each day to 23. Mid -month they took the restriction off and we have been able to serve all the patrons who have requested lunch. A new program "SINGO ", has been added, played like Bingo but using Songs rather than numbers. The patrons enjoy singing along to the music. We had excellent donated prizes and special refreshments for the event. Workshops for the month were all well attended, including the "Ask the Doctor" segment, Dementia Workshop, Yoga/Tai Chi Free Classes, In Our Own Voice mental health presentation, and the Blood Pressure Clinic. We will welcome a representative from Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez' office for a "S I T" - Senior Information Table to provide information, Heart Health Program provided by SCAN, Fall Prevention Workshop by Care Alternatives, Basic Computer Classes, Celebrating Love program from Catholic Charities and Natural Solutions to Sleep Problems. The lunch program will not be serving lunch on Lincoln's Birthday, so the Center will offer Soup and Salad as an alternative. A new program will be introduced, CHAIR YOGA, offered to accommodate those with physical limitation so they can experience the many benefits provided by Yoga. We offered a special Craft Corner workshop that was very well attend and will introduce an Origami Workshop in honor of Chinese New Year. We also began our Free Income Tax Services, a VITA Program being administered by the Community Action Partnership of Riverside County. Volunteers will be available Mondays, Wednesdays and every other Friday at the Center to provide services to the general public by appointment. The program is for low to moderate income tax payers, whereby Federal and State Income Tax forms are prepared and a -filed for the patrons by trained volunteer tax preparers. The service will be available through April 15th. Fundraisers: We offered an Indoor Yard Sale and netted $260 in January and Volunteer Rae Ann Ramshaw provided 16 haircuts which netted $112 for center programs.
