HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Reso No 1970-1304~ ~, RESOLUTION N0, 1304 WHEREAS, The United States General Services Administration did declare as surplus that Federal property and bui)ding known as the San Francisco Mint, located at the corner of Fifth and Mission Streets in San Francisco, California, and: WHEREAS, The United States General Services Administration on June 16, 1g69 did transfer and make available to the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare the aforementioned property and building for the purpose of deeding it to any public and/or nonp.rofit private agency to be used and utilized for health or educatiarr purposes, and; WHEREAS, The only qualifing application on file before the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare for the use of the property _<, and building is the San Francisco State College, whose announced purposes is to demolish the building and to erect a downtown campus, and; WHEREAS, The Smithsonian Institute qualifies for the use and utilization of the property and building as set forth by The United States Department of Health, Education and Weifare, but cannot under Congressional rules ask for or solicit any property of items, but may accept them as gifts for the people of the United States, ande WHEREAS, Certain Federal, State and Local Departments, as well as national and state private organizations have petitioned and asked that the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare deed the property and building to the Smithsonian Institute as a Western Division of that Instltute, so that as a historical edifice it will be preserved and that the many rooms of the mint bullding will be used for educational, cultural and display purposes, and now therefore: BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCII OF THE CITY OF ELSINORE, CALIFORNIA calls upon Secretary Robert H. Finch of the United States Department of Heaith, Education and 4lelfare to consider transfering the San Francisco Mint building and property to the Smithsonian Institute for the purpose of establishing and maintaining it as a Western Division of the Institute so that a greater number of citizens may acquire the knowledge and scientific services offered by the Smithsonian Institute.
