career in March of 1981. Upon graduation from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he
was assigned to the 547th Engineer Battalion located in Darmstadt Germany as a heavy equipment
operator. Two tours of duty later in Germany, MSG Hillyer was reassigned stateside to the 92nd
Engineer Battalion located at Fort Stewart Georgia. Reenlistment, after a two year tour at Fort
Stewart, sent MSG Hillyer back to Germany, assigned to the 330th Ordnance Company. He was
selected as the Lead Transporter for Operation Golden Python, the largest chemical munitions
retrograde project in United States Army history. Duties included direct responsibility for
scheduling the daily moves of munitions as well as assuring that all assigned transportation assets
were QA/QC and mission ready. After completing his second tour in Germany, MSG Hillyer was
reassigned back to the states, to his basic training home, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Dutiful to
his training and education, he attended the Battle Focus Instructor Trainers Course, and earned an
instructors position at the Transportation School. Following the end of a three year tour at Fort
Leonard Wood, MSG Hillyer elected to transition into the Individual Ready Reserves. In March of
2001, duty called and he joined the California Army National Guard. MSG Hillyer was assigned to
a Heavy Equipment Transporter unit, the 1498th, located at March Air Reserve Base. In February
2003, the company was mobilized. The 1498th Combat Het Transportation Company was the
largest National Guard unit deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After completing a
fifteen month tour, he returned home to Lake Elsinore, California. In early 2007, MSG Hillyer was
recalled to active duty in support of the Global War on Terrorism, and was assigned to Task Force
Warrior. He was directly responsible for writing all training packages on wheel vehicles for
deploying units. During his assignment with Task Force Warrior, he created and integrated a joint
training platform with the Department of the Navy for MRAPS, Mind Resistance Ambush Protective
System. MSG Hillyer, along with his team of instructors, were directly responsible for the
deployment training and validation of over 2,000 soldiers spread across 7 different states, as well
Guam. In late 2011, MSG Hillyer deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. While
deployed as the Senior Truck Master, he was directly responsible for the planning and execution of
over one hundred twenty combat logistical patrols. During his deployment, he created and
authored the first ever Logistical Convoy Commander's Academy. Over the course of 4 months, he
trained and certified fifty two officers, and over one hundred twenty five NCO's from within the
brigade as convoy commanders. His commitment to duty earned him a bronze star. This final tour
of duty overseas would return MSG Hillyer stateside and an assignment at Joint Base Lewis
McChord as the Transportation Branch Chief for the 593rd Expeditionary. Sustainment Command.
The assignment at JBLM would include responsibility for creating a western logistical hub of all
equipment and personnel transitioning in and out of the joint theatre of operations (Afghanistan).
On September 30, 2013, after selflessly serving for 26 years, MSG Hillyer retired from the United
States Army. A distinguished career was honored with the presentation of such prestigious
awards as The Meritorious Service Medal, and the Ancient Order of Saint Christopher. Since
retiring, David has resumed responsibilities as a full -time Waste Management Operations Manager
at El Sobrante Landfill, where he oversees all disposal functions. David has been a Waste
Management employee since September, 2001.

Longstanding Operations Manager David Hillyer returns full -time after 10 years of
intermittent deployment services
Riverside County, Calif. —Oct. 24, 2013 —Waste Management of Southern California is honored to
welcome home U.S. Army Veteran David Hillyer. Hillyer has reconvened his responsibilities as a
full -time Waste Management operations manager at El Sobrante Landfill where he will oversee all
disposal functions.
When the U.S. Army first deployed Hillyer to Iraq in 2003, local Waste Management leadership
assured him that the company would support his military commitment along the way. From 2003-
2004, Hillyer served his first deployment in Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was direct support to
hauling tanks from Choate to Iraq.
Following
this placement,
he returned to El Sobrante Landfill( for two years as an operations
manager.
In 2007, the U.S.
Army called upon
Hillyer, once again, to support the global war on
terrorism
during which he
stood up a training
platform for mobilizing units.
In 2009, he resumed his management position at Et Sobrante Landfill for four months later to return
to active duty from 2010 -2011 as a mobility branch chief under Operation Enduring Freedom.
Hillyer then was re- missioned to Joint Base Lewis- McChord in Washington from 2011 -2013 where he
oversaw all equipment and personnel Leaving Afghanistan.
After twenty -six years of active service, Hillyer retired from the U.S. Army on September 2013. "El
Sobrante Landfill supported my family and me all these years when I was called to active duty and
when I returned," said Hillyer. '9t was an awesome feeling knowing I had job security every time I
came back home —I Couldn't ask for anything more."
