REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR
AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: GRANT M. YATES
CITY MANAGER
DATE: MARCH 12, 2013
SUBJECT: REQUEST TO OBLIGATE FUNDS FOR PAVEMENT REPAIR
AND OVERLAY FOR HUNCO WAY
Recommendation
Authorize staff to obligate funds in the amount not to exceed $45,000 from Gas
Tax Funds for the pavement repair and asphalt overlay of Hunco Way.
Background
Hunco Way is located at the intersection of Collier Avenue and the main entrance
to Home Depot. Between 2001 and 2004 there was an industrial development
under construction which built the ten industrial buildings who take access off of
this street segment. These ten buildings constituted phase one of a two phase
development plan. Included in phase two of this plan was the connection of
Hunco way with Pasadena Street to the west and completion of Hunco Way in
Phase I. Soon after phase two was approved the development industry as a
whole quickly stopped, this development was abandoned and the replacement
bond for street improvements were not submitted. Since then, the street has
fallen into disrepair and is in need of paving.
Discussion
Staff has received several complaints about the condition of Hunco Way. In the
search for funding to repair and pave the roadway, staff has assembled funds
from Gas Tax through construction cost savings from the Sumner and Heald
Avenue paving project. An engineering cost estimate has been produced and
staff is requesting allocation of $45,000 in Gas Tax to fund the paving project on
Hunco Way. This project will repair the existing roadway and install a finish
course of asphalt over the whole road. If this request is approved by the City
Council, the project schedule is anticipated to be as follows:
