Our focus on older adult prevention education is continuing as the need is greater than ever before. It is estimated that even though older adults make up 13% of the population they take 1/3 of all prescriptions written in the United States. Of those who take prescriptions the DAWN (drug awareness network) show that 17% are seen in this nations emergency rooms due to prescription misuse. This year we have been awarded a larger contract with Riverside County Substance Abuse to provide environmental prevention to all ages. Our main focus is to educate parents and community members of the potential of abuse /misuse of dextromethorphan in younger people. Illegal drug use is on the decline while over - the - counter and prescription drug abuse is on the rise. These statistics show that a broad spectrum of society is affected, from the young person using these drugs to the parent or grandparent from whose medicine cabinet the drugs were taken. Our Environmental Prevention staff is busy educating communities of this problem while our Senior Services staff is educating older adults about the danger of drug interactions with alcohol and other foods /drinks. This year we are hosting a Generations for Prevention Summit. This summit is the culmination of our first year of our expanded Prevention contract with the County of Riverside. We are engaging community in our awareness project called Not In Our Town — We are Responsible; an educational program aimed at combating prescription drug and over - the - counter medication abuse and misuse. Every day thousands of citizens across the United States pay the highest price by dying due to abuse of these drugs. Thank you for offering to provide us with recognition for this event and just call us if you can attend any or all of our Summit.
