SUBJECT: MAYOR'S HIGH SCHOOL INTERN PROGRAM
Backaround
Mayor Melendez has proposed to establish an internship program for high school
juniors and seniors. The program would afford the high school students the opportunity
to learn how local government functions and operates to provide services to the
community.
Discussion
A limited number of students would be selected to participate in the program. They
would meet with the Mayor several times per month to work on city business and
various tasks assigned to them. This experience is intended to teach the students about
local government by using real world situations. The students may also be eligible to
receive Community Service hours for their participation in the program.
Fiscal Impact
It is anticipated that the fiscal impact to the City would be minimal.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council discuss and approve the development of the
Mayor's High School Intern Program for junior and senior high school students.
